TERRAINS OF 2012 PHARAONS

12/06/2012

1st PART - SAND

The 2011 edition of the Pharaons Rally has run over the outstanding “Egyptian-Libyan desert” as tradition goes, because this huge territory is the best in the world to host a high level CC rally. Today we talk of the SAND that features this area. It’s enough to think that in the 2011 edition, out of 2250 km of selective sections, right 1930 km were run over sandy grounds. Let’s see how.

1 - WHICH KIND OF SAND IS IT?

The “Egyptian sand” is quite compact and, except for certain areas, it doesn’t trouble you much if faced with proper means and due attention. As all the sand in the world, in certain periods of the year it’s shifted by the wind with marvellous shapes that will advise the most skilled drivers where to place their wheels. If compared with other deserts in the world, in the “Libyan-Egyptian” desert you can count on a sand that is structured in quite varied landforms: sand trails, dunes, cathedral dunes, complex and beautiful, and plateau…

2 – THE SIMPLE … DUNES

We’ll have simple dunes as much as we like along the route 2012, good for every taste, and they will make the difference along each stage, as the most part of the route will run over dunes. After the first chains, already in the first leg it’s a good start to start tasting these kind of obstacles, they’ll be part of your day for the whole week at 2012 Pharaons. These are “easy” dunes but they can hide some traps at the exit, the so called dunes “barcane” that the wind has carved on the exit side, after the top. They are enjoyable dunes but they are not to be under-evaluated, also because we’ll have many, really many of them at 2012 Pharaons!

3 – CATHEDRAL DUNES

They are a desert feature around the Sitrah oasis, halfway between Baharija and Siwa. The mid part of the fifth stage in the 2011 edition had these marvellous “complex” dunes one after the other one for over 211 km! These dunes must be approached with much, much respect. They must be “understood”, “read”, it’s not enough to follow the traces of those preceding you, or to take into account only your GPS directions. You will make a careful evaluation of the path, understand if you must skirt around or if you can go straight… not always the likely natural direction will be necessarily the right one.

4 – SAND TRAILS

Around the oasis, where the desert is more “attended” or at the old links over the famous “Oasis Road” drawn by the English between the two wars, there are long stretches of sandy trails, winding and wavy, sometimes with steps uphill and downhill that will challenge the front wheels of your vehicle, bike or car or - even more - your truck. From the driving point of view they are the most fun and certainly very exciting for those drivers used to harder terrains.

SUGGESTION FOR THE LESS EXPERIENCED:

Don’t worry for these challenges over those terrains, there is nothing impossible, you’ll only need some kilometres to get acquainted and then all will seem more feasible. Anyway the 2012 Pharaons is a “modular rally”, read the N.1 Press Release of last February over our website www.pharaonsrally.com: every day you can match the track over your skills and your energies. You can choose according to the directions given, stage by stage over which stretches of the Selective Sections you can unleash yourself and over which ones you prefer the asphalt link.
